How to use find the note

Find the Note is a practice tool that shows you a named note and asks you to locate it on a one-octave keyboard, C4 to B4. Each round picks a random target note, and you respond by clicking or touching the key, or by pressing the matching keyboard letter (A W S E D F T G Y H U J). You can turn on visible note labels if you want extra help while you learn the layout.

  1. Look at the target note shown on screen and find it on the keyboard, either by clicking or touching the key or by pressing the matching letter key.
  2. If you choose a wrong key, the target stays the same so you can try again until you find the correct note.
  3. Watch the correct-answer and miss counters to see how many rounds you have gotten right and how many misses you have made.
  4. When you are ready for a new target, press the Next note button to draw another random note from C4 to B4.

Try this example

If the target is F4, find the white key immediately to the left of the three-black-key group. The computer shortcut is F. Enable Show note names if you need a visual hint. A wrong G press leaves F4 as the target; a correct F press adds one to the correct counter.

Keep in mind

The tool only checks whether you can locate notes on one fixed octave of keys; it does not test staff reading, ear training or finger technique. Sharps and flats may share a key, so it does not distinguish enharmonic spellings.
