How to use tap tempo

Tap tempo is a practice helper that estimates the speed of a piece by measuring the rhythm of your taps. Use it when you want to find out how fast a song is or to set a steady pace for your own practice sessions.

  1. Click the Tap button or press the Space key while the tool is focused, tapping in time with the music you are listening to.
  2. Keep tapping steadily. An estimate appears once you have made at least 3 taps.
  3. The estimate uses the median of the intervals between your last 16 taps, so later taps refine the result. Sixteen taps supply up to fifteen intervals.
  4. If you pause for more than 3 seconds, the tool resets and starts a fresh count. Use the clear option to start over at any time.

Try this example

Suppose you tap along to a song at a comfortable walking pace and the estimate reads around 100. You can then practice your scales with a steady pulse near that speed to match the feel of the piece.

Keep in mind

The tool estimates the pulse you tap, which may be half or double the musical beat, so check the result against the song. It does not analyze a microphone, recording or uploaded file.
