How to use metronome

The Metronome gives you a steady pulse to practice against, helping you keep a consistent tempo while you play. It lets you set the speed, choose how many beats make up each bar, and add subdivisions so you can practice finer rhythmic detail. The first beat of each bar is accented so you always know where the bar begins.

  1. Set the tempo anywhere from 30 to 240 beats per minute using the tempo control.
  2. Choose between 2 and 7 beats per bar. This groups and accents clicks; it does not specify a full written time signature.
  3. Select 1, 2, 3 or 4 clicks per beat if you want to practice subdivisions such as eighth or sixteenth notes.
  4. Press start to begin the pulse, and change the tempo live while it runs to practice gradual speed increases, then press stop when you are finished.

Try this example

To practice a waltz at a comfortable pace, set the tempo to 90 BPM, choose 3 beats per bar, and leave one click per beat. The accent will fall on the first beat of every group of three, so you can check that your phrasing lands on the downbeat.

Keep in mind

Browser audio is a practice reference rather than a calibrated timing instrument, and background tabs or your audio device can affect playback, so check the timing against another source if precision matters.
