How to use progression builder

The Progression Builder lets you assemble four chords and hear them repeat as a simple piano accompaniment. Each position has its own selector, with published major and minor triads to choose from. A left-hand bass note supports a compact three-note right-hand voicing. Set 40–160 BPM; the chord changes every four beats while the synthesized tones decay naturally. Compare different chord orders and watch the highlighted step as the loop runs.

  1. Pick a chord in each of the four selectors, choosing from the major and minor triads offered.
  2. Set 40–160 BPM. The next chord begins after four beats; changing tempo stops the current loop so you can restart with the new setting.
  3. Press Play four-chord loop to repeat the sequence. Press Stop, change a chord, or leave the tab to stop playback.
  4. When the progression sounds right, use the download option to save it as a MIDI file for use elsewhere.

Try this example

Choose C major, A minor, F major and G major at 90 BPM. Start the loop and follow the highlighted chord cards. Compare the bass roots with the upper note names, then export a MIDI file containing one four-chord cycle.

Keep in mind

The right-hand notes span at most nine semitones. Voicings are chosen greedily to reduce movement, not through a globally optimal search, and the diagrams do not prescribe fingering. The tool does not identify songs or styles. The browser loops until stopped; the downloaded MIDI contains one cycle.
