Several scales can contain the same notes. Results do not determine the key of a song, and only published scale references are searched.

MAKE THE TOOL WORK FOR YOU

How to use scale finder

The Scale finder helps you discover published scales that contain a set of notes you have chosen. It is useful when you have a few pitches in mind and want to see which scales include them. You select pitches from the twelve pitch classes, and the tool lists matching scales from its reference collection.

  1. Toggle one or more of the twelve pitch classes to select the notes you want to include.
  2. Press Find scales to list the published scales that contain every pitch you selected.
  3. Look at the ranking, which orders matches by the fewest additional notes they require beyond your selection.
  4. Check the additional notes shown for each result, then open the scale reference to read more about it.

Try this example

Select C, E and G. The finder lists scales containing those three pitches, such as the major scale, which ranks high because it adds only four more notes. Open its reference to see the full note list.

Keep in mind

Several scales can contain the same notes, so a match does not tell you the key of a song. The finder searches only published scale references and does not analyze any music you play or provide.
